7 Herbal Baths

Herbal baths have long been used for soothing relief for such things as diaper rash, road rash, sunburn, and outpatient procedures such as vasectomies; they are especially relied upon during the post-partum recovery period. Herbal baths are commonly recommended by physicians and midwives to relieve pain, heal bruising, tears and stitches, prevent infection and even dry a new baby’s cord site. 

These baths are used to fight infection, and are safe for skin repair and immediate post-birth use because of the ingredients, (especially the salt), and the carefully cleaned tub.

Indigo Forest’s Bath includes generous portions of traditional, organic ingredients:

• Sea Salt - Antiseptic

• Comfrey Root – Skin knitting properties

• Comfrey Leaves – Healing to skin

• Lavender – Antiseptic and aromatherapy

• Calendula – Astringent and healing to the skin

Each bag of organic herbal bath makes over one full gallon of finished bath concentrate.  Use the entire amount for one full tub, or divide for up to ~3 sitz/basin soaks.

Recommended frequency:

Postpartum – Mothers typically enjoy 1 bath per day for at least the first week, followed by 2-4/week for the remainder of the first month. This bath is also safe for newborns and eliminates the need for additional cord care.

Wound Healing – Submerged the entire wounded area for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, 1-2 times per day until the integrity of the skin is restored.

What this bath is NOT for:

• NOT for deep puncture type wounds in the beginning – you do NOT want the top layer to heal over before the deep tissue, and comfrey is very good at its job of knitting tissue back together.  (Its common name is ‘bone knit’)

• NOT for serious wounds that need medical attention first or that are profusely bleeding

• NOT for use in a tub that cannot be thoroughly cleaned (ie: has old decals that have black or mildew underneath)

• NOT for unattended small children or compromised adults (COMMON SENSE, People)

• NOT ‘instead of medical care’
